Alarm system keypadCompanies have many options for protecting their personnel, and it’s important to find a solution that not only provides protection but also fits the needs of your organization’s operations.

Richard Greene sales engineer Keith Mueller explains that in many situations, a fully mechanical trap-key interlock is the best protection.

“We offer a complete range of solutions from electromechanical to all mechanical. You can put mats down to detect whether someone is in the room, or you can use lasers. But some of those solutions get expensive, and sometimes they’re not effective. A laser, for example, may be blocked by corners in the room or equipment that’s in the room,” Mueller says.

A mechanical interlock solution has many advantages. First, Mueller says, it doesn’t rely on electrical connections. A simple mechanical trap-key system reduces the possibility of failure if power is lost. It also can be used in hazardous areas where an electrical system would be difficult to implement. A mechanical solution can also be less costly than an electronic solution.

One example of a mechanical solution would be a double-key system. An employee would enter an outer gate with one key and then use another key to open an inner door to the area where the machinery sits. The employee can then take a third “personal security key” inside, providing an extra measure of protection against an accidental startup. None of the keys can be returned to the “operating“ or normal position until the personal security key is first returned.

“We can even offer a hybrid solution that includes solenoids or operators at the main door. That does require power to that panel, but it offers an additional layer to the solution that’s important for some applications,” says Mueller.

Richard Greene Company experts assess every application and situation to determine the most cost-effective and efficient solution. Simplicity is key.
