Robotiq makes servo-driven grippers and precise torque and force sensors for EOAT. They provide sensory feedback to allow the robot to make decisions based on part size, weight, insertion resistance, etc.
Assisted by Universal Robots, Richard Greene recently completed on-site Advanced Training for a manufacturer in Southern Illinois. Hands-on training covered programming of the UR robots and the Robotiq adaptive grippers.
The manufacturer had recently purchased a large number of robots and grippers to solve a major problem in their assembly process.
The manufacturer identified incorrect part picking as a major issue with assembling their product. Relying on conventional error-proofing techniques (pick lights, inspection sensors, etc.) resulted in 100’s of wiring connections with trouble shooting nightmares and prolonged down times.
Combining the easy to program, collaborative Universal Robots with the Robotiq 2-finger grippers allowed the gears, bearing assemblies, etc. to be picked up and their dimensions gauged by the gripper and sent to the robot. The robot then determines if it has picked up the correct part or not, delivering a consistent pick sequence.
Error proofing with Universal Robots and Robotiq grippers greatly reduced wiring and troubleshooting and downtime.
